is a 6.7 ISB at 340 hp enough for a 38 footer in the mountains, or hold out for an ISL?

asking for a neighbor at our winter spot. he's shopping 36 to 38 foot pushers, 2016 to 2019, and his budget keeps landing him on coaches with the 6.7 ISB at 340 or 360 (Reatta, Allegro Red, a couple of Ventana LEs). the ISL coaches in that length run 20 to 30 thousand more.

he tows a Wrangler and wants to go over Wolf Creek and through the Eisenhower once a year to see his daughter in Denver. i've got a Series 60 in the back of the Newell so i'm no help. what do you actually see on long grades with the 6.7?

i had a 2014 Allegro Red 37 with the 340 before the Bus. it does the Eisenhower. about 34,000 pounds with the toad, westbound on the steep part it held 45 to 50 in 4th, coolant around 205, never derated. with the ISL 425 i'm doing 55 to 60 on the same hill. for most people that's the whole difference, 10 mph and a quieter cab.

where the 6.7 hurts is pulling away from a stop sign on a hill. 800 lb ft against 1,250. you feel it leaving a fuel island more than on the big passes.

the engine is fine. look at the brake side. most 6.7 coaches came with the Cummins exhaust brake, not an engine brake, and coming down the east side of Wolf Creek at 34,000 pounds you'll lean on the service brakes more than you'd like. pick a gear at the top, 3rd or 4th, and let the Allison hold it. don't ride the pedal.

and check where the radiator is. the side radiator coaches handle summer heat on a long pull better than the older rear radiator ones.

we had a 2011 Ventana LE with the 360 before the Dutch Star and did Monarch Pass with the Jeep behind it. it got there, slow. what really pushed us to the bigger engine was the Ozarks. around here it's rolling hills all day and the 6.7 was downshifting on every single one. fuel mileage hardly changed between the two, 8.1 then and 7.6 now.

lurker question because this is exactly what i'm shopping. the coach i put a bid on last week is a 2018 Reatta 37K with the 340. it's me and a beagle, and i doubt we ever go west of the Black Hills.

is there anything on the ISB side to look at in a used one besides the oil sample? the listing shows 41,000 miles.

41k on a 2018 is light, which means it sat. look at the DEF side. the DEF heater and the dosing valve are what fail on those after a long sit, and it usually shows up as a derate warning 20 minutes into a drive, not at startup. ask for a scan tool printout of stored codes, not just active ones.

and get the engine serial off the tag. any Cummins shop can run it for open campaigns in five minutes, the dealer locator is on cummins.com.

passed all of this along. he bought a 2017 Allegro Red 37PA with the 340 from a dealer in Mesa last week, 139 and change. first trip is up to Denver at thanksgiving, so we'll find out about the Eisenhower. i keep telling him to make his own account.

meg, good luck on the bid.
